My 30th Year Visiting Fenway Park - Notes from a Feminist Vegetarian Plus Size Pin Up Sports Fanatic (dime a dozen, it seems...)

Well, would you look at that? All the sudden, it's been 30 years since my first ever Red Sox game at Fenway, with my brother's Cub Scout group. We all went as a family, and sat next to the Green Monster down the third base line, next to the Gulf Sign.

Who Do We Talk to about Making Official Pin Up Style Sports Gear?

Above is me, doing my level best to make unofficial Pin Up Style Sports Apparel. Seriously, how cute is that? I took my red, white, and navy blue wrap dress from Old Navy, matched it with my vintage style Red Sox mesh back baseball cap, wore pigtails and enhanced my little cheek mole, with matching red, white, and navy blue accessories and voila! Vintage style Red Sox sports wear. But can't someone just invent Retro Rockabilly or Pin Up athletic apparel already? Who do I talk to about that?

Lansdowne at Sunset

Lansdowne St is so much cleaner and shinier now than back in the gritty 1980s and 90s! Here's a fantastic shot of me with the gorgeous sunset, the ballpark, and the clubs of Lansdowne all lit up pretty.

I'm old enough to remember when House of Blues was Axis and Avalon. I saw Juliana Hatfield, Bjork, and even Jeff Buckley (RIP) at the Avalon when I was a young little baby teenager at 15 and 16, whose mom let her go to all-ages shows. Good call, Mom, as I totally did behave myself. I was good that way. I think I'm making up for it now though. Heh heh.

TASTES GREAT - A Bleacher Story

My parents had planned to take us all to Fenway as a family, when my sister was still a toddler, and when the "Taste Great, Less Filling" Miller Lite Ad Campaign was at its full popularity (that article is SOOO Mad Men-esque, only it's IRL!). My dad couldn't get seats in any of the nice sections, so he opted for just three tickets in the bleachers, Mom and little baby sis would stay home.

Back then the bleachers were like a frat party with a baseball game in the background. Very rowdy. Very swear-y. A great place to take your 8 year old daughter and 6 year old son.

We were on the "Taste Great" side of the bleachers. People were doing the thing like in the ads, where one side of the crowd says "Taste Great" and the other yells "Less Filling" -- Except that unbeknownst to us, somewhere along the lines, the "Less Filling" people had all gotten together to yell "EAT SHIT" and we didn't notice until about 3 responses of "TASTES GREAT" followed by roars of laughter. Ah Boston. Ah 1980s.

Fenway Park and Its Vegetarian Food Evolution

I love Fenway, though my 6'4" brother hates it and can't wait til they "tear the dump down" so he can have some real leg room at a game.

It used to be that my trouble with Fenway, and most -- but not all -- of the 11 MLB Ballparks I've visited, was that there weren't many vegetarian options for food. A shift occurred in the 2010s and now most parks do have a greater variety. Veggie dogs, veggie burgers, pizza -- there was once even sushi at Fenway. Don't know if they kept that though. I hope not because, just no.

Toronto has had veggie dogs since at least 2003. One of many reasons I liked going to games there. That and Toronto is awesome, the seats are inexpensive (less popular plus exchange rate) and you're never rained out with the dome.

This time around I had a milkshake with mini M&Ms, making it like a DQ Blizzard or something. A fine job canceling the giant salad I had at Loretta's Last Call beforehand. Oh well!

My Final Game Seeing Big Papi Play in the Regular Season

As you see in the first picture, I am wearing Aunt Betty's Lucky Buddha Medallion for David Ortiz. Sometimes in the regular season, the mojo just isn't working, though. It's like "nah, I'm busy...I got plans for the post-season playoffsd. Save it up." And that was the case for this game, which was quite a pitching duel and therefore pretty boring as far as games go. Though fun nonetheless, because it's Fenway!
